April 2007: Stage - "Intimate Apparel"
Jennifer Massey appears as Mrs. Van Buren in Barksdale Theatre's production of "Intimate Apparel".
The story, written by Lynn Nottage, takes place in 1905 and revolves around a 35-year-old unmarried black seamstress, named Esther, who struggles to make it on her own in New York City by creating beautiful lingerie for the ladies of Lower Manhattan. Massey plays one of Esther's high society customers... seeking companionship as well as couture.
"In her role as Mrs. Van Buren, Jennifer Massey adeptly channels the inner pain and uncertainty of a woman married to a man who treats her with disdain. She fills the stage with her presence and is as convincing as she is surprising."

"Just as impressive, Jennifer Massey plays [5 roles] and also narrates the play for us. The on-stage narration is a brave move that Horowitz, Massey and director Kenneth Cahall pull off with confidence to spare... with Massey switching into character on the spot."
